Understanding Long/Prolonged QT Syndrome

Long QT syndrome is a genetic heart condition that involves irregular heartbeats. A healthy, normal heart has a repetitive cycle which beats and rests. The measured time between beats is usually rhythmic.

However, an individual with long QT syndrome may have an irregular heartbeat. The measured time between beats may be prolonged. This extended time between the beats can cause your heart to rush the next few beats causing a rapid, chaotic heartbeat. This fibrillation in the heartbeat can hinder enough oxygen or blood from getting to the brain which can cause serious health problems, such as:

  • Fainting
  • Collapsing
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death

Patient, a thirteen year old, otherwise healthy child, is in gym class, and he is out of breath and his heart is beating too fast. His mom takes him to the pediatrician several times and is told there is nothing wrong with his heart. An EKG is done at the mother’s insistence and misinterpreted by a doctor unfamiliar with long QT Syndrome. Unfortunately, the child dies two months later from this treatable disease.

Failure to Diagnose Prolonged QT Syndrome

In many people, the first sign of this syndrome is the sudden death of a child, teenager, or other person. However the heart condition can be treated if diagnosed. Parents should pay close attention to children who become breathless when playing in sports or other activities.
