Macrodantin

Ohio Pharmaceutical Attorneys

Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic that has been used for over 20 years to treat urinary tract infections (UTI) and other infections. It remains in use today. However, if not used properly, it can cause significant problems for patients taking the drug over an extended period of time. The law firm of Jeffries, Kube, Forrest & Monteleone Co. L.P.A., offers decades of experience and personal attention to help you and your family recover compensation for injury or death caused by Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin).

How Can Macrodantin Cause Injury?

While Macrodantin may destroy infectious cells in patients, prolonged use of the prescription drug can cause pulmonary fibrosis, scarring in the lungs. The scarring limits an individual's lung function resulting in less oxygen in the blood. Insufficient oxygen can result in even more serious problems, such as liver damage.

A patient suffered severe liver damage and liver failure after taking Macrodantin prescribed for a prolonged period. A liver transplant was necessary to save the patient's life. She is currently awaiting the liver transplant. Our lawyers represented the family in a medical malpractice lawsuit and held doctors accountable for their negligence in over prescribing Macrodantin.

This is a known side effect within the medical community. Therefore, it is important for physicians to pay close attention when prescribing the drug. Often times, a patient is forced to see several different physicians at the same clinic due to scheduling. Doctors who fail to review the patient's medical records may prescribe Macrodantin without recognizing that the patient has already been on the medication for a period of time.

Our prescription drug injury attorneys hold doctors and hospitals liable for negligence that leads to Macrodantin injury or death, such as:

  • Improper monitoring of side effects while taking the prescription
  • Physician error in prescribing the medication
  • Failure to perform liver profile studies, blood tests, chest x-rays or other necessary tests when side effects occur

Further medical malpractice information

Probably the most difficult aspect of any personal injury case is determining the value of the case in settlement. When you are injured as the result of the negligence of another person, such as an automobile accident or a fall or a defective product, you may be entitled to compensation. Under the law of Ohio, compensation is based upon the loss and damages suffered as a result of the carelessness of another person or company.
