What is an Aneurysm?

An aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel or artery that is commonly caused by high blood pressure or artery disease. However, aneurysms are often common in the elderly following severe trauma, such as in an auto accidents. The bulge can dissect, causing severe pain or it can rupture or burst, causing sudden death. The most common aneurysms occur in the aorta (aortic aneurysm) or in the brain (brain aneurysm/cerebral aneurysm).

It is possible to treat or repair a dissected or bulging blood vessel and prevent it from leading to more tragic results, such as a ruptured blood vessel causing sudden death. However, the problem must be accurately diagnosed by medical professionals by recognizing symptoms and performing appropriate x-rays or CT scans. Doctors commonly misdiagnose aneurysm symptoms as a heart attack or other problem, leaving the aneurysm unchecked and untreated. Symptoms may include:

• Brain aneurysm: Severe headache, light sensitivity, nausea, seizure, pupil dilation, vomiting, and many other symptoms

If a doctor has diagnosed a damaged aorta or damaged blood vessel in the brain, they will often recommend surgery, especially if the blood vessel has increased in size. Doctors can replace the dissected or ruptured aorta with an artificial aorta enabling the patient to recover.
