Keeping Kids Safe this Summer

With summer coming, outdoor activities are inevitable and often incredible. Unfortunately, fun activities come with some safety concerns for our kids. In many circumstances, these risks can be minimized; following are some tips to help you keep your kids safe from serious injury this summer.

Sun safety for kids

Just a handful of bad sunburns increase a kid's risk of skin cancer later in life. During the summer days, children are swimming, playing sports or just hanging out with friends outside. Although sun exposure is incremental, one or two days of outside activities can create sun related injuries or illness. Here are some tips on how to cope with sun issues:

  • During the middle of the day, the harmful UV rays of the sun are at their strongest; plan indoor activities at this time of day.
  • Keep your kids covered by having them wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants or skirts.
  • Slather your kids with sunscreen; it should be at least SPF 15 and protect against UVA and UVB. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before your child goes outside.
  • Put a lid on them - hats offer great protection for the nose, eyes, ears and faces.
  • Children whose eyes are not protected by sunglasses are at greater risk for cataracts later on in life. Get sunglasses that wrap around your kid's eyes and offer full protection against UVA or UVB sunrays.

Getting overheated also presents a dangerous risk of heat stroke to kids. Parents should make sure kids of any age are never left unattended in a hot car. It may only take a few minutes for the temperature in a vehicle to reach dangerously high levels, which can cause serious injury and even death.

Water safety tips

Whether it is a backyard pool or a day at the shore, water activities are a great way to get cool on hot summer day. Of course, parents must be hyper-alert when kids are in the water. Here are some water safety tips to keep kids safe.

  • With children swimming and splashing there must be an adult watching them without any distractions.
  • Keep in mind that no kid or adult is "drown proof."
  • Children should wear a lifejacket whenever near water, not just when they will be swimming.

Parents need to stay hyper vigilant whenever children are near water. This includes supervision around all types of water like bathtubs, zero depth entry pools and kiddie pools, not only larger bodies of water like swimming pools and lakes.

Avoid high-risk activities

There are common summer-time activities when injuries may be more likely to occur. Parents may not be able to prevent injuries in all cases, but often being aware of the risks can help reduce the chance of injury. Some likely culprits of accidents and resulting in serious harm may include:

  • Pedestrian accidents
  • Bicycle accidents
  • Slip and fall accidents (commonly due to water-related activities and playground equipment)
  • Water related accidents, like drowning

Parents can reduce their kids' chance of injury by teaching safety tactics like looking both ways before crossing the street, never crossing the street between parked cars, always wearing a helmet while riding a bike, scooter or skateboard, riding on the sidewalk and obeying traffic signals.

By following safety advice, parents can help their kids avoid tragedy this summer season. If your child does suffer injury due to the negligence or actions of another, parents also have recourse to protect their child's rights and get compensation for their injuries. If tragedy does occur, contact 216-592-8364 and speak to a personal injury attorney about what occurred. At Jeffries, Kube, Forrest & Monteleone CO. L.P.A. we can explain your legal options and help you hold the responsible person accountable for your child's injuries.
