Winter driving can increase the likelihood of an accident

If you live in or around the Cleveland area, you are well aware of the fact that snow and ice are a big part of the winter months.

Although you'd like nothing more than to stay inside when the weather takes a turn for the worse, this is not always possible. Instead, you could find yourself on the road as the snow comes down and the ice begins to accumulate.

You can't control what other drivers do, but here are some tips for tackling snowy and icy roadways:

  • Do everything as slowly as possible. From accelerating to decelerating, you should slow down when the road conditions are less than ideal. If you don't, it greatly increases your chance of being involved in an accident.
  • Leave more distance. You should never drive too closely to other vehicles, but you need to leave even more space when the roads are snowy, icy, or wet. This provides you with more space if you need to stop in a hurry.
  • Be patient. As badly as you want to reach your destination, you can't get too far ahead of yourself. If you begin to rush, if you begin to drive fast, you're putting yourself in a bad spot. You should exercise extreme patience when driving in inclement weather.
  • Don't stop when climbing a hill. Once you get your momentum, you don't want to stop your vehicle. If you do come to a complete stop on a hill, you may find it impossible to start back up.

If you're involved in a car accident during the cold winter months, take these steps:

  • Call for both an ambulance and police.
  • Move your car to safety, as long as you are able to do so.
  • Check yourself and passengers for injuries.
  • Remain in your vehicle to prevent additional injury, such as by standing in the cold for an extended period of time.

Once you do all this, once you've been treated and know where things stand with your health, you can answer a variety of car accident questions related to your legal rights and how to receive compensation for your injuries and other damages. This will put you in position to resolve your issues and leave your accident in the past.
