Signs you may have food poisoning

When you purchase food at your local Westlake supermarket or eat out at your favorite restaurant, you expect the food you consume to be safe. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Food poisoning can range from mild to severe and can involve one of many different infections. The symptoms and severity you experience will depend on the kind of bacteria, virus, or parasite that was present in the food.

If you have ingested tainted food, it is important to know what kind of symptoms to look for that may indicate the level of medical treatment you need. In some cases, you may experience very mild symptoms that get better on their own. A more severe case may be reason to visit the hospital as soon as possible. To learn more about food poisoning, read below.

Common signs

If you begin to experience stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting within one hour of eating, you might have food poisoning. These symptoms can sometimes last up to ten days and might also include fever, muscle soreness, weakness or lethargy, and abdominal pain in general.

Causes

Some of the most common causes of food poisoning include campylobacter, E. coli, listeria, salmonella and shigella. Botulism is one of the worst kinds of food poisoning a person can suffer, however, occurrences tend to be rare. The symptoms associated with botulism include those mentioned above as well as slurred speech, vision problems, difficulty swallowing, dryness in the mouth and possibly even paralysis throughout the entire body.

What to do

While you can often fight off a mild case by staying hydrated and getting plenty of rest, there are signs that are clear indications that you must immediately consult a doctor. For example, if you are showing signs of dehydration, cannot keep down liquids, and have diarrhea longer than two days, you should call your doctor as soon as possible. In cases where a child or an expectant mother might have food poisoning, it is vital to seek medical help as soon as there is any indication that something might be wrong.

If you or a loved one has ingested tainted food, it is important that you get the medical treatment you need to recover as soon as possible. In addition, you might be able to file a claim against the food provider in order to get the compensation you deserve to help with medical expenses and any other losses you may have suffered.
